Abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck” is a remarkable procedure that has changed the practice of body contouring surgery. Significant advances in the technique have occurred over the past 10 years, making the results even more dramatic, while also increasing the safety of the procedure. An important part of abdominoplasty is liposuction, itself one of the most frequently performed aesthetic surgery procedures in the United States. The advent of newer abdominoplasty techniques and its combination with liposculpture has increased the potential for obtaining very pleasing results.

Certain changes can occur in the abdomen and trunk as a result of pregnancy and weight loss. Stretching of the skin as well as the fascia, which binds the muscle layers of the abdominal wall often occurs along with excess fat deposition in the lower. These changes give the appearance of a protuberant abdomen, sometimes with overhanging skin. Even though a woman may be very near her ideal, the extra skin and loosened muscular support may still give the appearance of a “pot belly.” Diet and exercise may help reduce excess fatty tissue, but the laxity of the skin and fascia often prevent the abdomen from appearing youthful again.


A custom surgical plan is then formulated based on the patients’ exact needs. Computer imaging and patient education are other important steps needed before proceeding with surgery. Often, a combination of procedures is recommended to achieve the best results. Full abdominoplasty and liposuction often require observation in the hospital for a 24-hour period to ensure the best safety. At the same time, adequate pain control, antibiotics, and patient care can be administered, which maximizes the safety and comfort of our patients.
