| Liposuction
is one of the most common cosmetic surgery
procedures performed in the United States
today. This procedure allows the removal
of the areas of unwanted fat from virtually
any area of the body. The most common
areas treated are the hips, thighs, and
abdomen. Other areas that are also treated
include the arms, knees, ankles, and also
fat around the neck and lower face. This
procedure can be performed safely in our
accredited office surgery facility. However,
larger procedures may need to be done
in the hospital.
Liposuction is best for patients who are
close to their ideal body weight and wish
to have certain areas of the body sculpted
for a more contoured look. Other patients
who are good candidates for liposuction
are those who are also undergoing tummy
tuck or other procedure. Liposuction is
a valuable part of these procedures as
well.
Liposuction is performed by first injecting
the fat with a special solution, which
aids in its removal. The solution also
contains medication to help reduce pain
and swelling following the procedure.
A special garment is worn for several
weeks after surgery to help maintain the
new shape.
I encourage my patients to begin a diet
and exercise program for the best possible
results. For those already in a fitness
program, I allow a gradual return to activity
over a period of 3 to 4 weeks.
